[Honda XR125L] Sticky rear brake

The rear brake is sticking and generally very stiff to move. It should be really light and the pedal should immediately spring back once you take your foot off the brake. It needs a good cleaning and relubrication.

Start by taking the wheel off the bike, and the brake backing plate out of the wheel. This hasn't been serviced in a very long time so is full of brake dust.

The drum looks good, just covered in brake dust.

The brake itself is make up for two brake shoes, two springs, a fixed mounting point, and a rotating point called the "brake cam". The movement of the brake cam is what's causing the problem.

To remove the brake cam, we need to remove the brake lever, a wear indicator, and a couple of seals. N.B. The brake lever will only fit on in one position.

The wear indicator.

One of the seals.

The cam was stuck in there so tight, I had to use a punch to remove it.

This should be lubricated, but instead it was full of brake dust and mud.

This is what it looks like cleaned up. The narrower part in the middle is a reservoir to store grease, so this will need to be greased up before reinstalling.

As you can see, we need to grease the brake cam and the seals before reinstalling. I also cleaned out the hole the brake cam goes into, otherwise it's just going to seize up again.

Brake cam and seal installed.

All back together.

Nice and snappy.
