On the last post about this bike, we found it had next to zero compression. In this update I tear down the top even to find out why.
Off comes the carb.
Off comes the carb isolator.
Off comes the PAIR system hoses and pipes.
Off comes the exhaust, or at least part way. The centre joint is stuck and it won't come apart. I'm worried I might fold one of the bends in the exhaust if I pull any harder, so I just rotate it out of the way and ignore it for now.
The top engine mount needs to come off as it attaches to the cylinder head.
Mount removed.
Off comes the rocker cover next.
I need to take the rocker arm assembly off next.

The dowels and head bolts come out next. The head bolts actually turn out to be head nuts.
There's an extra bolt on the outside that needs removing too.
The head is free of the engine.
Ew. That's not good. Looks like it's been burning oil for a while. Going to have to clean that before I put it back on.
The piston top looks black as soot as well. There's no witness marks that there was a head gasket issue. It's really looking like a scored bore / heavily work rings as being the issue.
Need to remove the barrel now. To do that I have to remove some more dowels...
... and a couple of bolts on the outside of the barrel.
That's not looking so healthy!

And scored piston skirt. Looks like it's more than just rings to get this back on the road.
Let's get the piston out. I'm paranoid about losing the clip down the crank case, so I cover the area with paper towels.
Safely removed. You can see just how bad the blow-by was - down to the oil control ring. No wonder it was burning oil. Time for a new piston and barrel. Need to order that, so I'll end the update here.
